Dear NFT enthusiast,
If you don’t exist in digital darkness then you may have heard of the biggest crypto news of the past week—Facebook has abandoned its identity for a new one in a bid to beat all its competitors to market in a new industry. In short, Facebook has changed its company name to Meta. In the statement to announce the name change, Mark Zuckerberg made it clear, lest it be confused, that the name change is a signifier of the company’s new focus on building ‘The Metaverse’.
The first thing that comes to mind is—can a Metaverse be centralized? Further, can Facebook (currently Meta…lol) overcome its addiction to centralization?
I think ‘no’ on both accounts. In our mind, it would be a disaster if Mark owns the metaverse. Well, maybe ‘disaster’ is being overly dramatic, but the point is, the whole concept of a metaverse rests on its openness and extensibility. For this reason, no one company or team will ‘own’ it. In fact, the very idea of owning a metaverse is entirely ridiculous. It’s almost like calling Bitcoin a company.
To all teams building open metaverses that respect their users’ privacy, this is our call to arms. With Mark having announced this name change, it’s clear Meta is ready to make a big push. We can’t let them win in the new world, not again.
Thank you for reading and have a great week.
