Dear NFT enthusiast,
Cryptocurrency risk management firm Elliptic released its NFTs and Financial Crime report stating that more than $100M worth of NFTs has been stolen in the 13 months from July 2021 to July 2022. The firm reported that although the market downturn had caused the value of NFTs to “slump,” scammers stole an estimated 4,647 of the tokens in July 2022.
It is sad to see so much value lost through theft. The best way to stay safe is to know all the ways you can be scammed and what to do to protect yourself. RMRK published a new security guide to help you better stay safe. Here are some tips from the guide on how to protect yourself:
Never share your private key or seed phrase with anyone.
Use strong and unique passwords along with multi-factor authentication whenever it’s available.
Always check that the DM you’ve received is legitimate.
Review the transaction history of NFTs. Be wary of NFTs with transactions in one day.
Never click a link that promises freebies or requires you to answer quickly. And if you’re tempted to do so, check first the origin of the link. This applies even more on Discord.
Watch the bids. Before accepting any bid, be sure to double-check the currency. Don't accept anything lower than expected.
Use reputable NFT exchange markets. Don't believe offers that sound too good to be true.
Thank you for reading and have a great week.
