Looking for a primer on NFTs? This should be the last introduction you’ll ever need.
Dear NFT enthusiast,
This past week saw tensions erupt between two of the top NFT projects on Solana. The bone of contention is over the future of Solana NFTs and the contenders are Magic Eden (Solana’s top NFT marketplace) and Metaplex (creators of the Solana NFT standard currently in use).
In a recent tweet thread, Metaplex alleged that Magic Eden was leading a “coordinated pressure campaign” to try and take control of the standard. Magic Eden then responded with a tweet thread of its own, writing that Metaplex had “falsely accused us of trying to take control over the NFT standard on SOL.”
The main contention is that the standard upon which all Solana NFTs are built should not be controlled by a single entity. So who is right and who is wrong? It is difficult to tell. If the past few months of crypto have taught us anything it is that things are rarely ever as they seem. As such, we will refrain from weighing in on this debate as we do not know the full details. We only hope that the infighting stops and the Solana NFT ecosystem come to an agreeable compromise.
On the Ethereum side, things are much better as OpenSea, having again changed course on NFT royalties, is working with other top protocols within the space to provide a lasting and somewhat decentralized solution to the royalties issue.
Thank you for reading and have a great week.
