Dear NFT enthusiast,
This week, we delve into a California court ruling that may have significant implications for the NFT space on iOS devices. As you know, Apple has long maintained control over in-app payments, including a 30% commission. This has presented challenges for NFT and crypto projects seeking to expand their functionality on iOS apps.
The court determined that Apple's anti-steering provision, which restricts app developers from using alternative in-app payment methods, violated state competition laws. This decision could potentially enable NFT and cryptocurrency projects to enhance their iOS apps' functionality, as they would no longer be subject to Apple's 30% commission on in-app purchases. The ruling may lead to increased competition in the app market, providing developers with opportunities to explore new revenue streams and business models.
However, it's important to note that Apple may choose to appeal the ruling, prolonging the legal battle and potentially delaying the decision's impact on the crypto and NFT markets. If the ruling stands, though, it would set a precedent for future cases involving app store policies and competition law, which could ultimately benefit both creators and users of crypto and NFT apps.
